The EU-funded RM Framework project reached a key milestone this October with a two-day series of meetings in Budapest. On 21 October, the consortium gathered for its General Assembly and Pilot Testers Meeting, followed by the 1st Outreach Event on 22 October at Europe Point. Together, these events showcased the project’s growing momentum in shaping a shared European framework for Research Management (RM) training and professional development.
Collaborative Progress Towards a Common Framework
During the General Assembly, partners reviewed the ongoing progress of work packages and refined the upcoming RM Framework Handbook — a competence-based, flexible guide that will serve as a cornerstone for high-quality RM training across Europe. The afternoon brought together pilot testers from six countries, who shared their institutional training experiences and contributed feedback to improve the draft Handbook through interactive discussions.

High Interest at the 1st Outreach Event
The following day, the 1st Outreach Event opened the project to a wider professional community, attracting research managers, trainers, policy experts, and institutional representatives from across Europe and beyond. The event introduced the project’s vision and first results, while inviting participants to exchange ideas and insights on the future of RM training.
The event welcomed participants from 15 countries — Belgium, Czechia, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States — reflecting the project’s truly international and inclusive reach.
Highlights included updates on European policy developments in Research Management, expert contributions from SRA International (SRAI) and ARMS, and engaging presentations on the RM Framework’s progress. International experts Evan Roberts and Mark Hochman shared global perspectives through recorded messages, emphasizing the importance of centring research managers and their career development in all efforts.
The programme concluded with an inspiring RM Training Talk Roundtable, featuring James Dunphy (ARMA UK), Teodora Konach (EARMA), Henning Rickelt (ZWM), and Eszter Ashlock-Kéthelyi (UMCG). Their discussion underscored that a European framework should be flexible, transparent, interoperable, and consistent, supporting mobility, peer learning, and professional recognition.
